A partner with The Arc of Cedar Valley, Up With Families (UWF) is located in Waterloo, Iowa, that supports families with young children with special needs locally and in surrounding towns.

Families with a child with special needs know the joy a child brings, but they also know the challenges and unyielding responsibilities.

UWF offers a weekend that provides support, understanding and information, as well as relaxation and the opportunity to meet other families facing similar circumstances.

The weekend is a rich and rewarding experience for children with special needs, their parents and siblings.

Who Can Attend
Twenty (20) families from the Cedar Valley with a child who has a physical disability, developmental delay, emotional or behavioral disability, sensory impairment or severe chronic medical condition are invited to attend.

Married couples and single parents are encouraged to participate. Single parents may bring a companion.  Siblings are invited so that the family can have this experience as a whole.  Cost for a family to attend is $40.00, but if this is a hardship, please let us know.

What to Expect

The weekend begins on Friday evening to get settled in, continues all day Saturday and ends Sunday afternoon. Each family is provided with a private room and is expected to stay overnight and participate in the scheduled weekend activities.

A fun-filled Saturday awaits the kids with carefully-chosen companions assigned on a one-on-one basis. The kids will enjoy a wide array of activities, tailored to each age group.  Entertainment is chosen and can include games, animals, puppets, magic, juggling, music, swimming, and more.

Meanwhile, the adults are treated to a day designed just for them. The program will provide each adult with opportunities to:

  • Get to know other parents and share concerns, joys, stories and ideas for parenting.
  • Learn about valuable resources that can help support their children and family.
  • Break away from their daily routine, relax and have fun!

Families participate one time in the UWF Weekend but often develop informal networks that become a source of ongoing support.

Applications will be available by contacting Kay Moriarty at 319-234-1307.  For more information, please contact Bret or Ronda Eick at uwfcedarvalley@yahoo.com or The Arc of Cedar Valley at arccv@episervice.org.
